Methodology

In this chapter I describe the methodology used in this study to make short-term ping traffic measurements.

I first introduce in Section 3.1 the measurement machines used in the study. In Section 3.2 I describe the operation of two software utilities used in the study to measure network traffic, namely ping and tcpdump. In Section 3.3 I present the data gathering procedure and several related concerns. Finally in Section 3.4 I review basic statistics used in the study.
